Float on Will Samson's sea of blue tones
Since the release of his debut album, Balance (2012), Anglo-Indian artist Will Samson has steadily built a catalogue of haunting and immersive sounds that explore the space between ambient, electronic and folk music. His latest release is the album, Harp Swells (2023).
On the record Paralanguage (2019), Samson's voice has never sounded more moving, committed and confident. His yearning vocals have brought comparisons to Sufjan Stevens and Patrick Watson, but in his compositions, Samson stands out. The musician's arrangements are intricate but accessible and eternally beautiful. In his music, he merges carefully selected electronic tones with analogue instrumentation.
Will Samson's universe is stylistically different from the neo-classical genre, but the music represents a comparable place of refuge. On his debut album, Nils Frahm was even responsible for the mastering.
As for the neo-classical inspiration, Samson says it was partly motivated by his desire to recreate the warm and soothing comfort of swimming underwater.
"I spent much of my early years swimming underwater, and still have vivid memories of exploring that silent world. I've often tried to evoke that same feeling in my music."
