A Colossal Weekend

A Colossal Weekend is a boutique festival located in the center of Copenhagen, catering for genre pushing, experimental music within the realm of ‘heavy’.

Every year the festival presents an extensive lineup consisting of well-established acts as well as never-before-heard constellations and newcomers on the scene.

The festival takes place from May 16-18 2024 at VEGA and surrounding venues at Vesterbro, Copenhagen. The partout ticket is sold-out. One-day tickets are still available.

The line-up for Friday is:

Anna Roemer feat. Ned Ferm (DK) - Immersive concert

To the musician Anna Roemer, the guitar is more than a musical instrument, more than a mere prolongation of her musicality. Rather, the instrument is the way (to guitar playing), which she knows and embodies. The album Azure (2022) investigates patience, strength and vulnerability, all of which Anna Roemer brings with her on stage. Her music offers the listeners an immersive experience into vast, sonic depths of the eternal beautiful and the lovely non-predictable. American saxophone player, Ned Ferm Roemer, will join Anna Roemer for the immersive live concert at A Colossal Weekend.

Briqueville (BE)

One night, the band ran into an old man who told them a story of a son murdering his father at the entrance of the school. Perhaps the stranger was the son, who else would keep a 70 years old newspaper article speaking of a patricide in his pocket? The band mask themselves, unifying their musical collective in a single faceless force. Exploring ideas of free creativity, Briqueville forges repetitive electro - metal mantras, meditative build - ups, raw and grinding like hatred years in the making.

Fange (FRA)

With bold musical moves and an obsession with uncomfortable sounds, Fange (mire in French) has transfigured their sludge roots with death metal and brutal industrial. In the slab of savage releases, the Bretagne-quartet offer on their latest release, Privation (2023), to balance their trademark wall of noise with bleak, though still more tempered, elements, from post-punk and cold wave. This only enhance the sonic span and wealth of detail in their musical design. Be prepared for a hike in the musical mire. Want to play it safe? Better find a way around Fange.

Indignu (PT)

The legendary Portugese quartet offers through experiences of loss, grief, and eroded friendships a reshaped perspective on the preciousness of life. The album Adeus (2022) is not a bitter farewell, although it feels painfully final. The music portrays clarity; it is solemn, melancholic and triumphant. The music may be without words, yet it unfolds as sonic poetry, and opens a space for introspection and room for the words of others.

Karambolage (DK)

Not the yellow starfruit. Rather, in typical Danish usage a carambola refers to a collision or conflict, but also means getting into near contact or approaching someone. Bringing naughty noise-jazz, dessert doom riffing, and progressive post-rock together, the instrumental trio from Aarhus creates movement between fragile, epic and intrusive moments in a raw and transparent expression. Whether the musical carambola is a collision or a charm offensive is for the audiences to decide! Recently, the band released a new album, Prås (2023).

Katla (DK) - Artist in residence

Although Katla only have a few years behind them as a band, they have managed to carve a solid name for themselves on the Danish metal scene. We are very proud to call Katla one of our artists in residence. Like the dragon of the same name, Katla fires up a burning flame of hell-fire that will scorch the entire stage. It's heavy and uncompromising doom, blasting away with full force. Katla consists of three good friends and ruthless musicians, a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer/singer. There are no tricks up their sleeves, just rock-solid, murky doom made with lots of love and Satan.

Kee Avil (CA) - Immersive concert

Canadian artist Kee Avil combines acoustic guitar and vocals with electronic noise, creating a sparsely instrumented, almost fragile soundscape unlike any other. Songs that appear as fragments of avant-garde pop melodies and elements of hazy post-punk, will slowly seep their way into ears and hearts of the audience. Whispering and boisterous at once, Kee Avil follows in the slipstream of experimental songwriters such as Fiona Apple, Eartheater and Scott Walker with distorted and beautiful melodies that are on the verge of collapse.

Konvent (DK)

Copenhagen is the death doom capital and Konvent are the newly crowned regent, stoically trudging through black mires following the footsteps of Candlemass and Black Breath of the 1990s. Tenacious riffing, guttural vocals, and massive-pounding pulse combined in a menacingly heavy production – these make up the 21st century revival of death doom. And you? You will kneel in the dirt!

Pleaser (DK)

Once you experience Pleaser live for the first time, all bets are off! As perhaps one of Denmark’s finest punk-bands right now, Pleaser have found their very own unique combination of punk, metal and early emo, which is both aggressive, danceable and adventurous. They band might still belong to the underground, but they have already garnered solid airplay both in their native country as well as in England. Pleaser delivers noisy pop-hooks that hit like a freight train and their songs delve into themes such as life, death and the inner search for hope and love. With last year's debut album in the bag, Pleaser is now ready to start a party at this year's A Colossal Weekend.

Spirit/us performance by Lisen Pousette (SE)

Driven by a fascination in the material and visceral dimensions of the voice, dancer and choreographer Lisen Pousette explores voice-body practices through the most subtle to the most extreme vocal forms. Spirit/us results from a collaboration with dancer and choreographer Olivia Rivière (SE/DK). The performance departs from the concept of resonance as a sonorous body and an affective state exploring the gestalts that different forms of screaming evokes. Spirit/us is a unique, site specific solo performance made especially for A Colossal Weekend.

Witch Club Satan (NO)

The occult, feminist black metal band Witch Club Satan consists of Nikoline Spjelkavik on guitar, Victoria Røising on bass and Johanna Holt Kleive on drums. They are recognized as one of the world's fastest growing metal bands and have already performed at prestigious festivals such as Øya, Ultima, Roskilde and Tons of Rock. They released their debut album on March 8th, Women's Day, and the album is considered a manifesto for feminine power, with a limited edition of 666 exclusive LPs.

Heave Blood & Die (NO)

Heave Blood & Die create indie post-punk-rock in Norwegian Tromsø. If life as a meaningless walk in neon lit concrete centers, then this band delivers the soundtrack. A musical protest against patriarchy, a colorful marche funèbre heading for Goth City. Heave Blood & Die brings to A Colossal Weekend their new, fourth album, Burnout Codes (2024). The album is dedicated to Elvind Imingen (bass), r.i.p.

Wiegedood (BE)
A violent yet epic brand of black metal. Focuses on the filthiest and most disgusting parts of human nature and society. It steers clear from the typical Black Metal themes and concepts, instead zoning in on the struggle we lead within, trying to overcome the fact we are all made from that same filth. A first hand look into pure disgust, a psychotic ride with synths, taperecorders, hot club jazz and distressing samples. A definite switch from their previous work, a dark turn
into something unexpected and unwelcome.
