Japanese punk legends turn VEGA upside down
Get ready for an evening of pure, colourful and uncompromising rock’n’roll blasting through the speakers as the three legends of Shonen Knife crank their guitars up to eleven.
Since forming in Osaka in 1981, Shonen Knife have perfected a truly unique musical recipe: Take the raw, straightforward energy of classic ’70s punk, mix it with the grand melodies of the ’60s and top it all off with delightfully naive, humorous lyrics about everything from banana chips and sushi to tennis and time travel.
Shonen Knife made their international breakthrough in the early 1990s when Kurt Cobain declared himself a huge fan and personally invited the Japanese band to join Nirvana on tour as their opening act.
Since then, bands such as Sonic Youth and Redd Kross have lined up to pay tribute to the trio, who today stand as one of Japan’s most enduring and beloved alternative rock acts.
Led by frontwoman and founder Naoko Yamano – joined by her sister Atsuko Yamano on bass and Risa Kawano on drums – the band prove time and time again that their live shows are in a league of their own.
Shonen Knife are an unstoppable force of nature, and on May 4, you can experience them up close as the pioneers unleash cascades of raw guitar riffs and huge sing-along choruses in Lille VEGA.
