The Danish song book is a vital part of how we experience our present and our shared history. A community is conditioned by the stories we tell each other and the way we see each one another in the same narratives. When we sing together, we experience a special joy, we find social solidarity and form a community across differences.

This is why VEGA embraced community singing and created the singing project Sangskatten which can be roughly translated into The Danish Songbook.

Sangskatten was supported by the Nordea-fonden and from February 2020 and for three years ahead, we brought communal singing to life at large and small events all around Denmark.

With the project Sangskatten, VEGA set out to create a framework for mutual understanding in communal singing and the Danish song book. During our tours around Denmark, it became clear how communal singing can unite us in both new and old songs.

Sangskatten both focused on contemporary songs like 'I morgen er der også en dag' by Andreas Odbjerg and 'Fortabt er jeg stadig' by Stine Pilgaard and Katrine Muff to bring The Danish Songbook into the future, while we also explored the vast treasure of songs and discovered older songs like 'Nu er dagen fuld af sang' and 'Udrundne er de gamle dage', which needed to be dusted off, polished, and rearranged to avoid being forgotten.

We tried to set the songs free with the help of Danish artists and have given both new and old Danish songwriters the recognition they deserve.
