Eclectic-electric - Arms and Sleepers in VEGA
Arms and Sleepers is the electronic trip hop brainchild of producer Mirza Ramic, who, along with former member Max Lewis, has an impressive discography of glitchy grooves. The musical DNA strand winds its way from experimental hip hop to painterly ambient and panoramic euphoria to modern post-rock.
Arms and Sleepers' upcoming album, What Tomorrow Brings (2024), spans four distinct musical parts, all of which speak to the personal upheaval of being forced out of your home. On the album, Mirza Ramic draws inspiration from Kenneth Branagh's award-winning coming-of-age drama Belfast.
When fighting broke out in Ukraine, Ramic reflected on his own experiences of war up close and personal, using experience and reflection as the creative engine for What Tomorrow Brings. The album's four sections: 'Innocence', 'Melancholy', 'Rupture' and 'Reflection' are a reflection on Mirza Ramic's life and experience, but also an image of the identity Ramic has since created.
While recent Arms and Sleepers releases, such as the cut shapes kingdoms (2022), are peppered with jaunty saxophone choruses and syncopated 16 bars that are released in an atmosphere imported straight from a brown bodega, What Tomorrow Brings is instead packed with propulsion spun into complex compositions reminiscent of post-rock names like BATTLES, Mogwai and Caspian.
