One of Canada's finest folk-roots names harmonizes VEGA
It is one thing to stand on the shoulders of a tradition, another to contribute and renew that same tradition.
Such is the case with the folk group The Deep Dark Woods . The band is unmistakably aware of their genre kinship with names like Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, Rick Danko and Jason Molina, but they are extremely skilled at seeking inspiration, processing it and giving it new, fresh life.
For nearly two decades, The Deep Dark Woods has shone as one of Canada's finest folk-roots acts, with a career that has featured several successful albums and singles. And now there's more news from lead singer Ryan Boldt and co.
The latest release is titled The Circle Remains (2025). An album where Ryan Boldt's eminent vocals float effortlessly and sensitively through the album's 11 songs. The release also received a few heartfelt words from the Canadian folk and roots media, Roots Music Canada:
"The Circle Remains lingers in quiet devastation, letting each song unfold at a deliberate pace. It aches, comforts, and haunts in equal measure, leaving listeners with a heavy chest and a softened heart".
The touching and heartbreaking is also a songwriting niche that Boldt often likes to explore. Even when he's not making music. In a press release, he says:
"It's all I do. When I'm not playing music, I'm listening to it, trying to find songs that make me feel an aching pain in my chest."
On October 7, the audience can therefore expect an evening in the company of The Deep Dark Woods and the sound of new, tradition-rich folk and with a lump in their throat.
