Singer/songwriter Maya Hawke takes over VEGA with infectious folk songs
As a musician, Maya Hawke has been influenced by timeless rock and folk names like Joni Mitchel, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan.
She released her first tracks "To Love a Boy" and "Stay Open" in 2019, co-written with Grammy-nominated songwriter Jesse Harris, and also began performing at music clubs around New York.
Her debut album Blush was released in 2020 and received praise from Pitchfork and NME for its understated compositions and thoughtful lyricism.
Two years later, the follow-up Moss was released, with Maya Hawke taking musical inspiration from Taylor Swift's organic sound on Folklore. The result was again rewarded with critical acclaim from media such as Pitchfork, NME, DIY Magazine and The Telegraph.
In May 2024, Maya Hawke's third work in her own name was released in the form of the upbeat Chaos Angel, which she calls a "happier album" than its predecessors. Melodies, instrumentation and Hawke's airy vocals are bright, welcoming and melodic, for example on the first single "Missing Out" - without the lyrics losing their existential bite.
Once again, the critics were satisfied with the performance. The Line of Best Fit rated it nine out of ten, while Under The Radar gave it eight out of ten stars and wrote: "Chaos Angel isn't just an album but a creative manifesto".
As the daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, she certainly doesn't get it from strangers. But as an actress in hit series Stranger Things, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Inside Out 2, and with three great-sounding singer/songwriter albums to her name, Maya Hawke has long since proven that she is a multifaceted artist in her own right.
