German punk legends take over VEGA
Germany's biggest punk band, Die Toten Hosen, who have been ravaging charts and concert venues for five decades, will give a concert on August 29th at Store VEGA.
In 1982, five friends in the West German city of Düsseldorf founded the band Die Toten Hosen. The predictions for their lifespan were bleak: just a few months. Starting out as a chaotic punk rock group, they have become one of Germany's longest-running and most successful bands.
Over the years they have experienced a lot: they recorded a John Peel Session with the legendary BBC radio DJ, played illegal concerts in East Germany, got into confrontations with the police during street fights, were invited by the Ramones to their farewell concert in South America at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, received death threats from neo-Nazis, started their own record label, performed unplugged at the Burgtheater in Vienna and saved their local football club, Fortuna Düsseldorf, from bankruptcy.
Every kid in Germany knows them, but they also have a surprisingly large fan base in Argentina, where they still perform regularly. To date, they have released 17 studio albums, sold over 14 million records and achieved two billion streams. With 12 number-one albums, they hold the record for the most number-one positions on the charts in Germany.
Although they now fill stadiums, they still love to play Magical Mystery Gigs in hospitals, ski huts, living rooms, prisons — and wherever else someone invites them. They are also known for their decades of political activism against racism and anti-Semitism. They have outlived six German chancellors and are still as active as ever.
Die Toten Hosen are, in short, a group of living rock legends who have performed on many of the world's biggest stages. On August 29th, however, they will perform in a more intimate setting when they take over Store VEGA's beautiful concert hall.
