Not all rappers pay homage to pop crooner George Michael and boozy bohemian author
Charles Bukowski as artistic role models. But then again, although Rejjie Snow is formally a rapper
rapper, he differs from the average hip-hop star in many ways.
Alexander Anyaegbunam, as he is known, grew up in Dublin and although he
technically top-notch rapper with a tight and understated flow, musically he is a genre breaker,
who greedily treasures all corners of popular music. His productions borrow extensively from
jazz, disco, soul and funk and are characterized by the same infectious curiosity and deep love of
for music history as Shabazz Palaces, Anderson Paak, Thundercat and Tyler, The Creator.
In 2016, he was signed to the 300 Entertainment label, which also features eccentrics like Young
Thug and Fetty Wap in the stable. The following year, he released the acclaimed mixtape The Moon & You,
featuring a visit from fellow rapper Joey Bada$$. 2018 saw the release of Rejjie Snow's excellent
debut album Dear Annie, which scored a maximum five stars in the NME, four out of five stars in
The Guardian, and Soundvenue's four-star review called it “a morphing ball of future soul and slow jams”.
future soul and slow jams”.
Rejjie Snow has also released the album Baw Baw Black Sheep (2021), his trippy
musical soundtrack to his favorite childhood movie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with help from
from MF Doom and Tinashe, among others. He has also toured with Kendrick Lamar and Madonna,
worked with Kaytranada and Clairo.
Most recently, Rejjie Snow released the single “Verde Oscura” this year with Spanish-American
singer Gabriela Richardson, but later this year he will release his third, as yet unnamed
album will be released later this year, pushing his artistic boundaries further and entering new musical
territories.
