Sports Team – the team everyone wants to be on
On May 23rd, the tempo specialists in Sports Team their third album Boys These Days. The British sextet takes the listener on a frenetic indie rock journey, tipping their hat to names like Roxy Music, World Party, Prefab Sprout and XTC.
Having moved from the London pub scene to the 5000 capacity Brixton Academy in less than twelve months, Sports Team have built a red-hot reputation as one of the UK's top live acts.
On Boys These Days, the band delves into the empty status symbols of 21st century life. In the press release, guitarist Robert Knaggs says:
"Where love is a tax-write off, and the moon is just a great big strip-mine in the sky. It's a soundtrack for the age of obsolescence. The promise of a shiny new life, with the breakdown already built into it."
Despite the heavy themes, the album is an uplifting and colorful journey through playful guitar riffs, bar piano, driven beats and subtle bass lines.
The band, notorious for their energetic and exuberant live shows, spent two intense years in the studio finishing their latest effort, which has created an insatiable urge to play live again. Frontman Alex Rice explains in the press release how great the deprivation has been: “Not playing live was like two years in a convent.”
The band cemented their place on the British music scene with their first two albums, the Mercury Prize-nominated Deep Down Happy (2020) and Gulp! (2022), both of which reached the top three on the UK Albums Chart.
Now the Sports Team is once again ready to take a trip to the arena when they will be in their strongest lineup in Lille VEGA on October 14th.
