Ukrainian doom specialists move into VEGA
1914 is back with a new offensive in the form of their fourth album Viribus Unitis. The title is Latin for "United Forces" and is taken from the personal motto of the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I.
Viribus Unitis reflects the band's own resilience through war, loss and massive life upheavals - it is a burning symbol of survival and solidarity.
The album was released in early November on the hard-hitting and trendsetting record label Napalm Records and builds on the band's conceptual approach to songwriting based on the dark chapters of history.
Told through real events and personal accounts from a Ukrainian soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army, the album follows a timeline from 1914 to 1919 and charts a bleak journey through the war's origins, climax, and traumatic aftermath.
The release is a continuation of their brutal chronicle of World War I. Unlike previous releases, which depict death and destruction, the new compositions delve into existential themes of camaraderie, endurance, and the path back to life with the horrors in the field bag.
Musically, 1914 remains true to their identity, mixing genres into a potent elixir of doom metal, crushing doom and ambient melodic textures.
