Arooj Aftab visits VEGA with new album
With an uncompromising fusion of jazz, composition music, Hindustani (classical Indian music), and ghazal (India's and Pakistan's answer to blues), Arooj Aftab has established an international reputation over the past decade and as the first Pakistani won a Grammy (for the song "Mohabbat" in 2022).
Her music builds bridges between ancient local traditions and modern songwriting, creating a space where past and present coexist effortlessly and initiate new musical dialogues. And soon she will open a new chapter in her career when she releases her fourth solo album Night Reign.
An album that The Guardian describes as "mesmerizing" and Pitchfork calls "boundary-breaking", and its first single "Raat Ki Rani" has already landed on April 18th. "The night is my greatest source of inspiration," she says about the album. In the quiet moments of the night, there is room for healing, desire, light, and love. The darkness loosens inhibitions and invites new ways of living, and the night allows for play and exploration.” The same goes for Arooj Aftab's voice, whose range and intensity complement the sunset.
The album includes new collaborations from names like Cautious Clay, Moor Mother, and Chocolate Genius, as well as from old friends in the form of Petros Klampanis and Maeve Gilchrist.
Night Reign clearly deviates from tradition and reinvents ancestral music. It reflects Aftab's 15 years in New York City and her unwavering commitment to remain true to herself. With openness, honesty, and skill, Aftab lets us come even closer. It is a step away from – but still with an awareness of – the grief and loss that inspired her Grammy-winning album Vulture Prince (Verve/New Amsterdam, 2021). On Night Reign, she takes on the role of singing about the possibilities of everyday life, the silence, and life-changing love.
