Bonny Light Horsemans warm folk songs ripples through VEGA
The American trio,Bonny Light Horseman , try with their rocking folk tales to create connections between people.
When Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman came together as a band, they dived straight into transatlantic, traditional folk music and added their own modern touch. Each of the three artists has previously made their mark in other musical constellations.
Mitchell is a solo artist under her own name and received massive acclaim and awards for her musical Hadestown (2019). Fruit Bats has been Johnson's creative space for years, but he has also played with The Shins and Califone. In addition to his own music, Kaufman has produced, written and played with names like Cassandra Jenkins, Josh Ritter, Bob Weir and The National.
The band's self-titled debut album landed in 2020, followed by ten new songs on Rolling Golden Holy in 2022, and at the beginning of June, the double album, Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free, was released. Along with the news of the new songs, the band released the first single, “I Know You Know,” from the album with an accompanying music video; Bonny Light Horseman's first of its kind.
The 20 songs on Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free celebrate the root and chaos that often fills a human life. The trio confidently delivers the generous songs that thematically move through universal topics such as family, love, loss, and grief.
Last summer, Bonny Light Horseman performed at the Syd For Solen festival, and the music magazine Gaffa gave the concert five out of six stars with the following headline:
“Plenty of banjo and broken hearts as the folk supergroup played for a perfect summer afternoon on the big stage at Syd for Solen.”
When Bonny Light Horseman takes the stage at Lille VEGA in November, a perfect winter evening is therefore at the top of the warm folk menu.
