Indiepop delights from Camera Obscura fills VEGA
The brilliant Scottish indie band Camera Obscura is back with new catchy tunes. The band recently released their self-titled sixth studio album Look to the East, Look to the West.
Fronted by singer and songwriter Tracyanne Campell and reunited with producer Jari Haapalain (who also appeared on Let's Get Out of This Country and My Maudlin Career) the band have delivered an album that encapsulates the essence of Camera Obscura's sunshine-soaked indie pop while also showing a more sophisticated side to their songwriting skills.
Look to the East, Look to the West is a hard-fought album that comes after a long hiatus. Back in 2015, the band lost their close friend and keyboardist Carey Lander, and the last track on the album "Sugar Almond" is a tribute to her as well as testimony to how difficult it has been for the band to rise after the loss.
The band is with the new album, which was recorded in the same studio as Queens Bohemian Rhapsody, back with a more organic expression of synths, bittersweet guitar riffs and laid-back drums. Gone are the heavy, slurred reverb passages that characterize the previous albums. It gives the listener free access to the beautiful songs, which search for the heart and reflect on love, loss and the passage of time.
The album has received rave reviews, and Pitchfork wrote in their 8.0 rated review: "Look to the East, Look to the West reminds us of better times while making it possible to believe the best is yet to come."
The first single "Big Love" introduces the listener to an eclectic meeting between country rock and prog rock. Pedal-steel melodies gently streams through the arrangement as Cambell lyrically tackles the complexities of wanting to rekindle an unhealthy relationship.
