Dive deep into the turbulent waves of life with Swim Deep
After a rollercoaster of personal reflections and extreme professional ups and downs, the quintet - singer Austin 'Ozzy' Williams, bassist Cavan McCarthy, keyboardist James Balmont, guitarist Robbie Wood and drummer Thomas Fiquet - emerge in 2024 having navigated a creative rebirth following a close collaboration with solo artist and producer Bill Ryder-Jones.
British indie pop band Swim Deep will release their fourth and most raw, affective and modern album to date, Theres a big star outside, in summer 2024.
It's an album rooted in the changes Ozzy himself experienced when he turned 30: getting married, becoming a father and even losing loved ones. But it's also an album indebted to the more incremental revelations that only come as you get older and really sit with yourself: "My friend said the best thing his therapist had told him was to imagine himself as a five-year-old and describe what you look like," he says.
"I immediately saw this incredibly brave and confident but extremely anxious child, and I think I've had all these feelings inside me from the start."
The road to the album has thus been one of deep introspection, expressed through the acoustic guitars and flourishes of a Mellotron keyboard - one of the finest musical exports from their hometown of Birmingham.
Support: Jens Konrad
You may already recognise Jens Konrad's vocals from the pop group SENSO, who performed at Roskilde Festival in 2022, or from the electronic duo Lyra Valenza, who took the Apollo stage this year.
In May, Jens Konrad made his self-titled debut with the heartfelt single "Drage Energi", followed by "Stjernesjæl", which listeners of P6 in particular have become familiar with.
August 23th the artist was ready with another release from his upcoming debut album, which is expected to be released this autumn - the energetic "Se Hinanden Igen", which according to Jens Konrad draws on his burning love for the 80s Danish pop scene and especially names like Kliché and TV2.
Behind the song is a deeply personal and heartbreaking story: "I lost one of my best friends in a car accident a few years ago. It happened shortly after we had finished high school, a time when we felt almost immortal. It was a huge shock for our entire group of friends and we went through a long grieving process together", says Jens Konrad, who hopes that others who have lost someone close to them can connect with the song.
In other words, it's a song for all those who are no longer here, he elaborates. "It's been a long journey to figure out how we as friends and family can honour his memory and let him live on in us. Now he lives on in my songs," continues Jens Konrad, who previously sang primarily in English but has now found a new source of inspiration in the Danish language.
