A lyrical odyssey with Bess Atwell's musical journey through the self
The Brighton-based artist Bess Atwell released the single “Sylvester” at the end of 2023, personifying an inner tension between the desire to be a source of joy for those we love, and the subsequent dissatisfaction and loneliness that these attempts can also bring.
Shortly after recording the track, Atwell was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, which brought a wave of affirmation for her both personally and artistically.
In her own words, Atwell talks about the single:
"Sylvester is a character I created on a family vacation as a child to make my parents laugh. It's a song primarily about family, the roles we play to maintain peace, and the desire for a more genuine form of connection."
With the release of the album Already, Always (2021), Bess Atwell's message as a songwriter was fully realized, marking her as one of Britain's most confident young voices.
With her subsequent album from 2022 Already, Rearranged, Atwell captures her classic vocals and raw lyrical depth with a more electronic sound, drawing the listener on an emotional journey that, with the synthesizer and bass, can be felt deep in the heart.
In the beginning of 2024, Atwell also released the single “Release Myself”, which, in harmony with “Sylvester”, captures the artist's emotionally charged explorations of personal experiences and the complexity of human relationships in her more classic singer-songwriter style.
Special Guest: Caoilfhionn Rose
