The Wedding Present is never to be exchanged
The British indie rock band boasts 18 top 40 singles. It all started back in 1985 when frontman David Gedge delivered the band's debut single "Go Out And Get Em Boy" to a highly enthusiastic record label.
Their early releases are beautiful and honest love songs drenched in a warm, tasty sauce of noisy guitar melodies.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the release of the magical album Bizarro. On the album, the group cut back on the frenetic noise they were known for on their previous releases and cultivated a more subdued, melodic darkness. Throughout the tracks, David Gedge delivers lyrics of heartbroken despair and dark sarcasm.
Their most recent album is 2016's Going, Going. The release garnered widespread praise, and music magazine The Line of Best Fit wrote in their review of the 19-track album:
"It's The Wedding Present as we've known/loved them since 1991's tour de force Seamonsters-opening squalls of feedback, a deceptively sweet melody, and Gedge's lyrics fluctuating between self-lacerating and acrimonious in the midst of ferocious guitars."
Their music has evolved over the years from fast-paced indie rock with nods to bands like The Fall, Buzzcocks and The Go-Between to a more eclectic mix of cinematic passages, shoegaze and classic rock sounds.
On September 11, you can take a nostalgic journey back in time to the indie rock era at Lille VEGA, when the modern classic Bizarro will be celebrated
