A magical rock spell from Dea Matrona in VEGA
Irish Dea Matrona makes harmonious rock that sends appreciative nods to rock luminaries like Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles.
The two members and multi-instrumentalists Orláith Forsythe and Mollie McGinn met in 2017 through a shared love of the aforementioned bands. On stage, they alternate between being lead singer, guitarist, bassist and playing other instruments.
The debut album, For Your Sins, landed in the spring of 2024, and as recently as October, the group released their first single in over a year. “Magic Spell” is the name of the track, whose alternative rock sound, feminine energy, dark romance and mysterious mood will undoubtedly appeal to fans of The Last Dinner Party, Greta Van Fleet and Wolf Alice.
Originally, the two women made a living as buskers in their hometown of Belfast, and as if it was almost written in the stars, it was naturally a cover of the heroes Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" that in 2020 made the two women go viral on social media.
The virality really got the snowball rolling for Dea Matrona, and suddenly it led to guest appearances on The Late Late Show with the song “Make You My Star,” which also topped the British and Irish rock charts.
Despite several offers from major record labels, Dea Matrona have declined and maintained their status as indie darlings. So you can be sure that it is two power women with integrity that will visit Ideal Bar on March 20th.
