VEGA gets draped in gothpop with Ethel Cain's gothic tones
“Like a Gothic cathedral in modern pop music, Ethel Cain towers.”
This is how Politiken has described the American singer and songwriter, who, with her mix of eccentric singer/songwriter, bedroom productions and Southern Gothic tales, sounds like an alluring date between Lana Del Rey and David Lynch.
Ethel Cains background is varied. She was raised in a deeply Christian home, but left the church at 16. In addition to being one of the most original musicians of her generation, she is also a trans woman and diagnosed with autism, which she speaks openly about. All of these elements flow together in her both personal and socially critical songs, which elegantly interweave religion, sex, gender and social criticism with American folklore and popular culture.
The big breakthrough came in 2022 with the single "American Teenager", which was proclaimed one of the best songs of the year by, among others, Pitchfork, The Guardian and The New York Times, and the debut album Preacher's Daughter, whose black-edged pop songs and cinematic lyrics were praised by media outlets like Clash Music, The Line of Best Fit and DIY Magazine.
Ethel Cain is an artist who never stands still, and since her debut, she has toured most of the globe, collaborated and performed with Boygenius, Florence + the Machine, Caroline Polacheck and Mitski, and worked as a model in New York and London. In 2024, she was also included in Forbes magazine's prestigious list "Forbes 30 Under 30".
Ethel Cain emphasized at the beginning of 2025 that she is a musician who challenges herself and her expression. Here the album was released Perverts, who with her oppressive, uncompromising experiments in the borderland between drone, slowcore and ambient shows a completely different side of her. But her work ethic doesn't stop there: later this year she is due with another album, Willoughby Tucker, I Will Always Love You, which is being described as a prequel story to Preacher's Daughter.
The new Willoughby Tucker Forever tour is Ethel Cain's biggest to date and will take her to London's Eventim Apollo, Paris' L'Olympia, New York's Radio City Music Hall, Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium, Berkeley's Greek Theater and many more.
In 2023, Ethel Cain made her concert debut in Denmark with a well-known concert at Roskilde Festival, which Politiken called "a performance that showed that Ethel Cain has control over both her singing voice, robber stories and atmosphere".
Her devoted fans, who populated Avalon on that occasion, can look forward to a joyful reunion with the American unique when she gives her first Danish venue concert at Store VEGA on Saturday, October 25th.
