Flamenco's new frontrunner delivers raw emotions and soft R&B in VEGA
Andalusian singer and songwriter María José Llergo has become a distinctive voice on the Spanish and international music scene. With deep roots in southern Spanish flamenco, she has created a unique R&B sound, dressed in electronic soundscapes and insistent, raw emotions.
On the debut album Ultrabelleza (2023), Llergo unfolds his musical vision with an uncompromising sound, where dreamy beats meet cante jondo – flamenco's deepest and most emotional vocal expression.
The rare international breakthrough with flamenco as the musical core also made The New York Times sharpen both its ears and its pencil. And in the same year, a feature was published about Llergo's uncompromising homage to his Andalusian origins.
Llergo released his debut EP in 2020Healing(2020), where it was clear that she had a special ability to tell important stories - stories told through songs that stir emotions and reconcile us through lyrics.
The Rolling Stones wrote about the EP:
"Her material carries an ancestral consciousness of the Romani culture and history, filtered through elongated melismas and LOST TWIN's ethereal, electronic sounds. InHealing, Llergo reminds both her country and the world that the injustices her people have faced — discrimination, exploitation, displacement, and machismo — are very much alive in 2020”.
