Tarrak rhymes a razor-sharp generational portrait in VEGA
Tarrak stands as one of Greenland's most important rappers and is a significant and central voice in a young generation of Greenlanders who are struggling to define a modern and independent Greenlandic identity.
The virtuoso wordsmith broke through the sound barrier with his debut album in 2016. FxGxS, where the song "Tupilak" in particular became a huge viral hit. In 2019, the album was released Joseph Tarrak, where the rapper searched the depths of the soul in a deeply personal and autobiographical project. The debut was later picked up by the theater world with a play of the same name. In 2023, the single “Uummatima” landed with Suspekt and last year the singles “Ua” and “Fjernsynip Aquutaa” were released.
Tarrak tells about “Fjernsynip Aquutaa” in an interview with GAFFA:
“The first verse of the song is about my own experiences, and the second verse is more outward. It's about the system. Part of the lyrics says, "they're only busy when there's an election". I feel like when there's an election, they hold hands (the politicians, ed.) and talk about suicide. But after the election, they disappear. So that made me want to write the song "Fjernsynip Aquutaa" (remote control, ed.).”
For Tarrak, the political is connected to the personal, and there is something at stake in Tarrak's textual universe to that extent. Through his lyrics, Tarrak conveys a razor-sharp and harsh criticism of colonialist thinking, but the lines of verse are also a call to Greenlanders to stand by their own identity and culture.
Tarrak has received several awards, including the Talent Award at the Koda Awards 2017, the Award of the Year at the Koda Awards 2021, and the Self-Government of Greenland's Encouragement Award in 2017.
In 2020, Tarrak appeared in the documentary The Battle for Greenland. In 2023, Tarrak performed as the first Greenlandic rapper at Roskilde Festival.
