The Mystery Lights have a 20-year history as a band. With a shared love for 60s rock bands like The Mc5 and The Velvet Underground, friends Michael Brandon and Luis Alfonso put their heads together to create their very own rock and roll. They quickly built a reputation for their energetic live performances with virtually no breaks between songs.
In 2016, they released their self-titled full-length album, which led NME to crown them as “one of New York's finest garage rock bands.” In the wake of the release, they toured the world, playing shows in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
The Mystery Lights had grown out of the small underground club scenes and were now among the headliners at international festivals. The band today consists of, in addition to Brandon and Alfonso on vocals and guitar, Alex Amini on bass, Lily Rogers on keys and Zach Butler on drums.
The Mystery Lights faced major challenges when, just before they were due to record their third album, the bassist was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that resulted in 12 broken bones. With good support from friends and family, Amini was able to recover enough to join the studio.
Their third album, Purgatory, was released in the fall of 2024 despite headwinds. The soundscape is composed of an eclectic mix of punk, art rock, and a hint of country, and the album contains dark, psychedelic tracks. Throughout, there is a cohesive force that
