Unwound entangles VEGA in groundbreaking post-hardcore
In a powerful explosion of noise rock, avant-garde, punk and post-hardcore, American Unwound up through the 1990s and early 00s cemented themselves as a band of distinctive caliber with the capacity to shape a completely unique sound.
Unwound made a name for themselves with the critically acclaimed album Leaves Turn Inside You at the turn of the millennium. After that, the band had to see themselves disintegrate, as both internal disputes and bassist Vern Rumsey's substance abuse problems made it difficult to keep the project together.
However, a reunion has been in the works several times. In 2022, the reunion took shape, and Unwound played their first European concert since 1999 at the Primavera Festival in Barcelona in 2023. Now the style-setting trio is back on the tour bus and is ready to hit the road again with their genre-defining discography. When Unwound visits Lille VEGA, it will be the first time that the band has stepped on the guitar effects pedals in Denmark.
Upon Leaves Turn Inside You's release, Pitchfork wrote the following about the style-defining and sonically autonomous record:
"Unwound is rock and roll, but only loosely speaking. It's often very aggressive with Justin Trosper belting out fractured lyrics like a napalmed banshee. But their music is so much more sophisticated, stranger and original than that of their contemporaries that it wouldn't be far from the truth to say they've written their own vocabulary and deployed a new syntax in this otherwise staid genre."
At the periphery of the sound of Unwound, sonic memories of guitar riffs and melodies from names like Sonic Youth, The Jesus Lizard, Hüsker Dü and Gang of Four ring out. And there is a definite DIY attitude and shape-shifting rock with the trio.
