Genre-shattering English jazz act takes over VEGA
The last 5-10 years have seen a sustained buzz around London's jazz scene. Here, young musicians are reinterpreting jazz traditions with fresh inspiration from hip-hop, soul, funk, and Africa and the Middle East. One of the most important names in this creative upsurge is Alfa Mist.
Behind the stage name hides Alfa Sekitoleko, born and raised in the English capital. Today – ten years after the release of his debut EP Nocturne – he stands as a leading musical octopus, who has made his influence felt in his homeland and internationally over the past decade as a pianist, producer, rapper and valued collaborator for other musicians.
As a teenager, he developed a love for hip-hop and grime, and although his songwriting is characterized by a blue-toned and melancholic thoughtfulness that exudes long nights in neon-lit metropolises, his love for bouncing beats, soul's sweet sense of melody, and electronic productions also shine through in his compositions.
Alfa Mist has a long line of excellent releases under their belt, the latest of which, Anthem, was released in the spring of 2025. The album was recorded in collaboration with drummer Richard Spaven and is a superior display of compositional ingenuity and rhythmic equilibration. The Guardian awarded “Anthem” 4 out of 5 stars and called it “a mighty showcase of beats and keys”.
Here at home, music lovers have previously been able to experience Alfa Mist at Bremen Teater, Voxhall and DR Koncerthuset. Now the opportunity will soon be there again, when the genre-defying unique act gives a concert with songs from its latest album on February 3, 2026 at Store VEGA.
