Your new girlcrush Coco & Clair Clair fill VEGA
The American duo Coco & Clair Clair have joked that if their debut album, Sexy (2021), was a little boy, their album Girl from August 2024, would be a little girl. And the feminine energy pulses through the nine new songs in the duo's distinctive mix of hip-hop, lo-fi dream pop and sparkling electronic production.
Taylor Nave and Claire Toothill coolly reject boring men who want to date them, speak less kindly of people who copy them, and enjoy being the center of a party. The kind of unfiltered confidence is often attributed to male musicians, but Coco & Clair Clair's music is also lush, vulnerable and intimate.
On Girl they push the boundaries between stereotypical male and stereotypical female characteristics further than ever before with new honest lyrics, polished production and the palpable excitement that has always been evident in their work. Girl is an exciting and apt album that shows how multifaceted girl life and femininity can be.
While they were recording Girl, the duo listened to music where the feminine vitality permeated the songs. Lana Del Rey, Brandy, Milky, Madonna and Saint Etienne have all provided inspiration for the songs on the album. Nave and Toothill allowed themselves to be consumed by the various emotional states, so that they could write honestly and intimately with plenty of charisma.
On the opening number "Martini", the song begins immersed in the loneliness and worthlessness that you can feel after meeting someone who has hurt you in the past. But in comes a rap verse and flips the narrative. Together, the two elements provide a nuanced picture of how self-confidence can fluctuate depending on the situation.
The duo talks about the album in their press material:
"We were writing about our relationships, referencing and incorporating lyrics we had written years ago - lyrics previously put aside for being too vulnerable or confessional," Coco and Clair Clair say. "We experimented with a style of production that felt more refined, intentional, and intimate. We embraced the tension between that new approach and the characteristic qualities that propelled us early on: our flamboyance and boastfulness – all virtues of femininity and girlhood as much as they are tropes of masculinity. We worried less but cared more, which felt powerfully feminine.”
