Joy Crookes sings the pain beautiful in VEGA
The South London singer, songwriter and cultural powerhouse, Joy Crookes , has today revealed the news that her long-awaited second album Juniper will be released on September 26th ahead of an extensive UK and EU headlining tour. In connection with this, she will once again visit Store VEGA on December 7th, 2025
The forthcoming album is a candid and fearless work that confirms Joy as one of Britain's most vital and original voices. A unique talent of her generation, Crookes delivers an album that is both emotionally raw and sonically rich – humorous, heartbreaking and deeply human.
Following the success of her 2021 debut album Skin, Crookes set out to create an album that would take her further, both musically and personally. 'Juniper' is the result: a project marked by depth and dynamism.
Crookes describes the album as “more nuanced” than Skin:
“With Juniper, every situation is physical and present – it's me in the middle of it all.”
The title refers to resilience, and the album delves deep into themes such as body politics, mental health, queer love, anxiety, the hypocrisy of the industry, and the ecstasy (and fear) of falling in love.
Singles like “Pass The Salt” and “I Know You'd Kill” showcase Crookes’ lyrical acuity—a blend of poetic detail and razor-sharp humor. The Euro-pop-inspired “First Last Dance” uses euphoric melodies to mask deep emotional struggle, while the cinematic “Perfect Crime” lets Joy step into character as the protagonist in a Western duel.
On Paris, the album’s closing track, Joy reflects on a formative queer relationship: “Something I feared so much finally felt, actually, like love.” It’s a sentiment that runs throughout Juniper—an album that captures the beauty and brutality of emotional openness.
