The world is Ki!'s musical oyster
On 27 February, you can take a kaleidoscopic trip around the world in Ki!'s eclectic universe.
After releasing the first part of his album Yong Gwanglo back in April, the eminent instrumentalist, whose real name is Christian Ki Dall, was showered with critical acclaim and stars. Ki! adds all kinds of musical spices in a marvellous genre mix that sends sun salutations to names like Fela Kuti, George Harrison, J Dilla, Link Wray and Sharon Jones. GAFFA wrote in their five-star review of the release:
"Ki! is a musical prodigy with an enormously high base level, and his sense of melodious melodies is indisputably of international quality."
In Ki!'s melting pot, listeners will find groovy Afrobeat, glitter-infested disco, divine guitar solos and retro-futuristic Asian synth anthems.
On November 22 he will release Part Two by Yong Gwanglo. The album opens with "Change My Mind", featuring Camilla Florentz of ONBC and epo-555 on vocals. The track evokes a cinematic 80s film pastiche mixed with 2010s dream pop and indie with synthwave influences.
While Part One was primarily instrumental, several of the upcoming album's tracks feature vocal tracks. For example, "Non Stop Action" takes the listener to 90s East Coast hip-hop with rap lines from Al Agami and "Bright Side" features Carl Coleman of Palace Winter blending Motown sensibilities with atmospheric indie-folk.
Ki! is a producer and multi-instrumentalist whose love of music has led him to explore techniques and sounds from many different genres and eras. Yong Gwanglo means "Crucible" in Korean and speaks to both Ki!'s music and his personal biography. As reflected in his name, Christian Ki Dall was born in Korea but grew up in Denmark.
