Mekdes begins 2026 with the album THE BOY I AM - a work that marks his most personal musical expression to date. Mekdes is an uncompromising independent artist with full artistic control. He self-publishes his music, something that also shines through in his work as a musician and songwriter.

The album stems from three years of intensive personal development and a conscious process of challenging his own self-image and the norms he has previously felt limited by. “The album is a bit more personal than my music has been before,” says Mekdes, continuing:

“The title came about after I made the song called THE BOY I AM"The song became a kind of test of myself. I needed to break out of some norms and feel how it felt for me to say some things out loud."

The song sparked some thoughts and from that came a new realization. For Mekde's actions THE BOY I AM not about a firmly defined identity, but about the courage to let go of notions of what one “should” be.

The album has rhythmic pop as its common foundation, but spans afropop, rnb, soul and a mix of electronic and acoustic elements and also contains Mekdes' previous single "Waiting For You", which was released back in June. The song marks another important theme in the album's narrative: standing by yourself - even when you find yourself in a place where you don't quite feel at home.

“'Waiting For You' is about being in situations where you may not feel safe or quite fit in. Instead of trying to live up to other people's expectations, the song is about finding peace within yourself and in the people who truly have you – and letting go of the need to be 'the right version,'” says Mekdes.

The single followed the releases “This Isn't Cool” and “Easy” and showed a more vulnerable side of Mekdes' vocals and songwriting.

With the album THE BOY I AM Mekdes builds on his musical career and development, proving once again that he has one of the country's most iconic and distinctive voices - and that he is an extremely talented producer and songwriter.

In just a few years, Mekdes has cemented itself as a well-known name in Danish households by, among other things, appearing in the 2024 edition of the TV program Toppen af Poppen.
