British house pioneers fill VEGA with consciousness-expanding vibes
Leftfield is a style-maker in the truest sense of the word. The British electronic production group's expression, which trippyly mixes house with triphop, techno, breakbeat, dub and reggae, is the reason why progressive house emerged as a subgenre – simply to describe their unique sound!
The group was formed in London in 1989 and, along with names like Underworld, The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy, was a central part of the electronic music revolution that swept across England and the rest of the world throughout the 90s.
Leftfield's breakthrough came with the single "Open Up" featuring guest vocals from Sex Pistol legend John Lydon, which reached number 13 on the UK Singles Chart. The group effectively followed up that success with the masterful debut milestone "Leftism" (1995), which reached number 3 in their home country.
Here Leftfield set new standards for experimental and meditatively immersive electronic music. The same year the album was nominated for a Mercury Prize, while Mix Mag described Leftfield as "the single most influential production team working in British dance music".
In 1999, the excellent follow-up “Rhythm and Stealth” was released, which topped the UK album chart, and subsequently Leftfield was once again nominated for that year’s Mercury Prize. However, in 2002 the members chose to call it quits. Fortunately, Leftfield was restored in 2010, when they began performing live again.
In 2015, their third album “Alternative Light Source” was released to praise from, among others, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, Mojo and Uncut, and in 2022 the fourth full-length “This Is What We Do” followed, which Mojo called “a timely blast of healing positivity, all but impossible to resist”, while The Guardian gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
The group's Danish fans can attest to the fact that Leftfield is still a vital acquaintance live when the electronic legends visit Store VEGA on March 19th, 2026.
