Japanese post-rock legends visit VEGA
Since MONO was formed 25 years ago in Tokyo, the group has explored the relationship between light and darkness, hope and misfortune, birth and death. This has made them an institution not only in Japan, but also internationally in alternative rock circles.
The group is known for its distinctive and patiently unfolded instrumental compositions, which alternate between the meditative, dark, atmospheric, and epic, and which genre-wise are positioned in a unique and undefinable place between mood-filled post-rock, doom, stoner rock, and raging metal outbursts.
Bands like Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Sun O))), Explosions in the Sky, and their compatriots from Boris are obvious – but not exhaustive – references. MONO consists of Takaakira "Taka" Goto (guitar, glockenspiel), Hideki "Yoda" Suematsu (guitar, glockenspiel), Dahm Majuri Cipolla (drums), and Tamaki Kunishi (bass, guitar, piano, glockenspiel), all of whom have been with the band since the beginning.
The consistent lineup translates into the band's sound, where the four members effortlessly and with intuitive collective understanding move between the many layers and moods of the songs.
On June 14th, MONO adds a new chapter to their impressive career when they release their 12th studio album OATH. The album is recorded and mixed by the legendary Steve Albini (Pixies, PJ Harvey, Nirvana), with whom they have worked on several albums before.
Live, MONO is known as a passionate, intense, and captivating experience, which with its superb sense of silence, noise, and crescendos captures the audience's attention. Since the early 2000s, the band has toured all over the world, including here at home.
