Fantastic Australian punk rockers slams VEGA
Hold on to your hat and glasses! Because when Australian The Chats plug in the amplifiers, there is no holding back. The Chats were formed in 2016 in Queensland and cultivate a love for simple and unpolished punk rock, filled with sharp guitar riffs, fast tempo changes, snarling vocals and self-deprecating lyrics about being young, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer - a song title like "I've Been Drunk in Every Pub in Brisbane" says it all!
They have been raised on Ramones, Black Flag and Buzzcocks, but also mention Australian rock groups like Cosmic Psychos, Dune Rats and Eddy Current Suppression Ring as sources of inspiration. The Chats have also made a tribute song to AC/DC ("AC/DC CD") and interpreted Metallica on the tribute album The Metallica Blacklist (2021). The group really caught attention with the single "Smoko", which went viral in 2017 and was praised by rock stars like Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, Iggy Pop and Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner.
The track comes from the excellent self-released EP Get This in Ya!!, which in 2019 was re-released by prestigious garage rock label Burger Records (Brian Jonestown Massacre, Thee Oh Sees, Michael Cronin). In 2020, their first full-length album High Risk Behaviour was released, reportedly named after a fine drummer Matt Boggis received for skating recklessly. The album was a big hit in Australia, where it reached the top 5, and it was praised by media outlets like NME, Q Magazine, NME and Kerrang!. It was followed up in 2022 by Get Fucked, which offers more fierce and energetic guitar attacks. Pitchfork awarded the album a high grade of 7.7, and it was praised by NME and DIY Magazine among others. The album climbed to second place on the Australian album chart.
Live, The Chats are also an energy-pumping experience. Over the years, they have toured intensively outside their home country, especially in England, and have been a support band for Guns N' Roses, among others. Thus, a punk rock party of another world is set when the Australian trio, led by the always spirited frontman Eamon Sandwith, performs on November 20 at Store VEGA.
