Australian punk tornado takes over VEGA
If you're looking for homemade DIY punk with whipping drums, banging riffs, and angry vocal outbursts, then Amyl and The Sniffers delivers.
There is a short distance from thought to action with the Australian group that recorded their debut EP Giddy Up in just 12 hours. Equally busy are they when they blast through their high-energy tracks, blending elements of punk, glam, and pub rock into explosive guitar detonations.
Amyl and The Sniffers are centered around the highly charismatic lead singer Amy Taylor, who drives the rest of the band forward. They have been compared to The Stooges and The Damned, but Taylor herself mentions diverse sources of inspiration such as Minor Threat, AC/DC, Sleaford Mods, Dolly Parton, and Cardi B! The group's first album was released in 2019 in the form of the self-titled debut, which received an impressive rating of 7.2 from Pitchfork, who called Amyl and The Sniffers "such a blast," while Uncut, Clash, Mojo, and Kerrang! also praised the album.
The success continued on the follow-up Comfort to Me since 2021, it has been internationally released through Rough Trade (The Libertines, The Strokes, Alabama Shakes). Kerrang! gave it a top score of five stars, while Pitchfork raised the score to 7.6 and referenced the debut by writing: "Everything feels bigger, heavier, and more meaningful".
The album climbed all the way to second place on the Australian album chart. Live, Amyl and The Sniffers are also a fantastic punk tornado. In addition to performing in large parts of the world – including, among others, at Gutter Island and a sold-out Loppen in 2022 – the band has toured with Weezer, Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, and Jane’s Addiction.
