Raw bluegrass and grim tales of robbery in VEGA
"Mumford and Sons' evil twins" That's how the Canadian band The Dead South introduces themselves. Similar to the British band, the quartet from Regina, Saskatchewan, cherish the traditions and genres of folk music - in their case bluegrass, folk, and country. But while Mumford and Sons' expression is pop and appealing, you can feel that The Dead South has roots in the punk scene.
They may perform in white shirts and cowboy ties, but the fantastic quartet uncompromisingly cultivates the darkest and most brutal sides of American folklore with blood-dripping lyrics about drinking, violence, murder, betrayal, and ghosts. Delivered with three-part harmonies, banjo, mandolin, and boot stomping!
The Dead South was formed in 2012 by Nate Hilts (vocals, guitar, mandolin) and Danny Kenyon (cello, bass, vocals), who, after playing together in several short-lived rock bands, got the idea to form a "rockin' stompin' bluegrass band". They joined forces with Scott Pringle (guitar, mandolin, vocals) and Colton Crawford (banjo), and shortly after, The Dead South became a reality.
Their debut album Good Company was released in 2014, and the big breakthrough came in 2016 with the single "In Hell, I'll Be in Good Company", which made it to the top 50 on the US charts and top 20 on the US iTunes Chart. The song has been streamed over 100 million times on Spotify, and the accompanying video has more than 400 million views on YouTube.
Since then, The Dead South has established itself as a globally recognized name, touring in large parts of the world - including Tønder Festival, where the group gave a concert in 2023 that was praised by Politiken and GAFFA.
In February 2024, their fourth studio album Chains & Stakes was released, topping the American bluegrass chart just like its predecessor Sugar & Joy. Danish fans of The Dead South can look forward to experiencing the new tracks live when the Canadians visit Store VEGA with an extra concert on March 11, 2025.
