Toro y Moi takes over Store VEGA with new psychedelic pop gems
The chillwave pioneer performs tracks from his brand new album Hole Erth at Store VEGA.
Although he is considered one of the anchors of the chillwave genre, Toro y Moi is impossible to label. Ever since he broke through with his debut Causers of This in 2010, he has been happily floating in his own musical ocean.
Here, obscure samples, hip hop beats, psychedelia, power pop, soul, funk, disco and electronica blissfully cross-pollinate each other in zigzagging, searching and beauty-worshipping compositions that also have an ear for catchy melodies and choruses.
Behind the bilingual band name that mixes Spanish and French is American singer, songwriter and producer Chaz Bear, who grew up listening to soul, funk and house and later influences like Beach House, J Dilla and Animal Collective.
The sum of this musical diet resulted in home-rolled productions on his debut that, with its nostalgic, dusty, sample-based sound, instantly made Toro y Moi one of the hyped acts of the time. Kanye West proclaimed his love for him, and Chaz Bear subsequently collaborated with Tyler, The Creator.
That Bear is a musical chameleon became clear on the follow-ups Underneath the Pine (2011) and Anything in Return (2013). The former's broadly orchestrated sound was rewarded with the prestigious "Best New Music" label by Pitchfork, while the latter's poppier songs inspired by R&B, 90s dance and more secured him a career-best position on the US album charts, where he entered the top 60.
His discography includes a total of eight albums, including the brand new Hole Erth, which hit the shelves September 6th. The title is a tribute to the style-creating American DIY magazine Whole Earth Catalog and as usual features a wide range of musical inspirations and guests, including Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service), Brockhampton founder Kevin Abstract and synthpop group Porches.
