Electropop songs for the entire emotional spectrum
The English electropop songwriter Emily Underhill makes music under the artist name, Tusks . Her musical universe was compared to Sigur Rós and Explosions In The Sky at the beginning of her career. In April, she released her third album Gold. The ten new songs move through synth-heavy environments with emotional and atmospheric vocal harmonies. The soundscapes vary from joyous and contemplative moments to slowly built crescendos.
Underhill uses her music to communicate sensitivity. There is a raw and revealing underlying state in her universe that feels authentic and intimate. She often describes challenges and subtleties of a romantic relationship in a relatable manner.
Gold maps out the different stages a relationship goes through when falling apart. At the same time, there are considerations about the impact of isolation – both individually and socially, as well as anxiety and mental health.
The musician shares about the album:
"A lot of this album was inspired by contrasting experiences. Processing a breakup and then falling in love again. Being constantly surrounded by people in lockdown, then suddenly being completely alone and free. Being in the city vs being in nature. We wanted to echo these contrasts in the production of the music so constantly moved between lo-fi and hi-fi production.
