Billie Marten colors her emotions with captivating folk song
Billie Marten has since the release of his debut album, Writings Of Blue And Yellow (2016), built a solid fan base with her distinctive, airy vocals and captivating folk guitar. With her very first releases, she made a mark with critics and was named part of the BBC Sound of 2016, which picks out the new stars of the coming year.
In her musical career, she has expanded her genre repertoire and experimented with the instrumentation of her songs in recent years. This has resulted in a string of well-received singles and albums over the past nine years.
Billie Marten has recently released her fourth album, Drop Cherries (2023), which paints 13 musical pictures of love. The album is rooted in the unpredictability and chaos of nature, and Marten describes love as blood-red cherries spread on a cream-colored carpet:
"Dropping cherries is such a strong, visceral image that I tried to channel throughout recording in Somerset and Wales, to capture the vibrancy, unpredictability, and occasional chaos one experiences within a relationship. Imagine stamping blood-red cherries onto a clean, cream carpet and tell me that's not how love feels."
The album received rave reviews from, among others, the British newspaper The Independent, which awarded the release five out of five stars. Marten is particularly praised by the reviewers for his lyrics and his ability to describe intimate feelings through his colorful language in a naturalistic folk packaging. The result is a tender album that hits the listener right in the heart.
