Inciting indie harmonies and roots sound from Rainbow Girls
Rainbow Girls is up to date with the latest HAUNTING from 2024 - an album whose inspiration has grown out of a single word.
The colorful band name contrasts with the album's lyrics, which alternately revolve around spells, aliens, the fabulous darkness, and being led to one's grave. All of this is set on a foundation of moving guitar playing and seductive vocals.
Erin Chapin from the band elaborates on the inspiration behind the release:
"But what is it about female harmonies that make people want to describe them as 'haunting?' It's because they're powerful. And if a woman is powerful, then she must be a witch. We are reclaiming the word 'haunting' to describe our power – the power we find in reckoning with our trauma, grief, loss, and fear."
The album delves deep, presenting an intimate yet expansive collection of songs that together shed light on the transformative nature of pain and the increased strength that follows.
The band's sound changed shape to a more raw and stripped-down acoustic sound after the drummer left the band in 2016. The change also put further spotlight on their intricate vocal harmonies, which also meant that the band truly established themselves as a name in the American roots scene.
Since then, Erin Chapin, Caitlin Gowdey and Vanessa May have created a large following across the United States and Europe with their provocative charm and musical precision.
