An echo from a twilight class with Charlie Cunningham in VEGA
If you were in the situation of having to define the sound of an early twilight hour, British songwriter Charlie Cunningham's soft and minimalist tones would be a qualified choice.
The singer plays virtuoso on both piano and acoustic guitar, and his impactful vocals create feelings of equal parts light and dark, melancholy and joy.
The musician's latest album In Light (2025) invites the listener into a universe of gentle organic arrangements and feather-light melodies. The album is a tour de force in Cunningham's dynamic guitar lines, which with almost one hundred percent accuracy can turn any late summer blues into small tremors of autumn joy.
The collection of tracks has a distinctive understated quality. Cunningham's voice seamlessly weaves into the compositions' unexpected tonal shifts, spherical passages, and moments of sonic distortion. The result is beautiful, atmospheric musical tableaus where emotions run wild.
On In Light Charlie Cunningham worked closely with guitarist Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno) and drummer Liam Hutton. The album was produced and mixed by Luke Smith (Keaton Henson, Foals, Everything Everything).
Charlie Cunningham is a sonically collaborative artist with musicians such as Keaton Henson, Nick Mulvey and Blanco White. He has released a handful of albums, EPs and singles since 2014. In Light is his fourth album to date.
