Slacker-darling takes over VEGA with new album
If there's any modern musician who personifies the curly inventiveness and sloppy-sauntering melodiousness of slacker rock, it's Mac DeMarco.
While his appearance may seem sloppy and goofy, his songwriting skills are sharp. The Canadian indie darling seems to be able to wring a golden guitar riff out of a battered electric shovel in two minutes. At the same time, his edgy and ironic-humorous personality is a tightly woven part of the songs' uniqueness and appeal.
Mac DeMarco grew up in Duncan, British Columbia in southwestern Canada, and as a teenager he played in indie rock, R&B and post-punk bands. His career really took off when he signed with the hyped indie label Captured Tracks (DIIV, Dum Dum Girls, The Soft Moon) in 2012, who released his debut album with the very Mac DeMarco-esque title 2.
2 marked Mac DeMarco as one of the most exciting and imaginative indie names of our time. Not least after Pitchfork awarded the album the prestigious “Best New Music” label and the unheard-of high score of 8.2. In 2014, the sequel was released Salad Days, which also received “Best New Music” honors and reached number 30 on the US album chart.
In total, Mac DeMarco has released five studio albums and, in addition to his well-known mix of slacker rock, yacht rock and synthpop, has also played with inspiration from country & western on Here Comes the Cowboy – which reached the top 10 in the US in 2019 – and muzak, easy listening and instrumental music on his latest album Five Easy Hot Dogs.
Now his fans can start to rejoice, because 2025 offers big news for Mac DeMarco. As he himself says: “I have an album coming in August, see you at the shows”. The album details have not yet been announced, but it is certain that Denmark is part of Mac DeMarco's upcoming world tour. On October 30th, he will give a concert in Store VEGA with new songs and good old favorites on the setlist.
