Indie rock crooner Hamilton Leithauser is back in VEGA
The charismatic songwriter and former lead singer of the legendary indie rock band The Walkmen has spent the last eight years writing and recording sparkling new indie gems for his newly released album. The release is titled This Side of the Island and is written in the heart of Brooklyn in the home studio The Struggle Hut.
Known for his evocative lyrics and impressively raspy vocals, Hamilton Leithauser has been a significant force in New York's vibrant indie rock scene since the early 2000s, effortlessly moving from the international successes of The Walkmen to a thriving solo career.
This Side of the Island boldly turns away from the folk-rock tendencies of its two previous records I Had a Dream That You Were Mine (2016) and The Loves of Your Life (2020). On This Side of the Island introduces the songwriter to a more groovy and bass-heavy sound. It's a wondrous musical journey, where Hamilton Leithauser, through the nine eclectic tracks, sends loving nods to a wide range of names such as Sly Stone, Talking Heads, Randy Newman, Neil Young, Panda Bear and SZA.
The album was produced in collaboration with sound wizard and friend Aaron Dessner (The National). Leithauser says in a press release that Dessner "raised the ceiling and lowered the floor on the whole thing" and expanded the emotional and sonic depth of the record. The collaboration resulted in a release that is both timeless and modern.
The texts on This Side of the Island showcases Hamilton's relentless optimism and biting humor while tackling heavy themes of loneliness, love, loss, and resilience. Inspired by events in the songwriter's personal life, the songs resonate deeply in today's polarized social and political world.
