Relentless punk with Birds in Row at VEGA
For more than a decade, Birds in Row have been a respected name on the international punk scene.
With three critically acclaimed albums to their name, the French trio have forged a uncompromising sound where punk’s raw energy collides with crushing walls of noise and moments of vulnerability.
In the past, Birds in Row hid behind blurred photographs and initials rather than names in an effort to let the music speak for itself. Over the years, however, the trio have opened up more about the people behind the project. This is especially evident on Gris Klein (2022), where a desire for honesty and human connection comes to the forefront. Pitchfork highlighted this development in its review, writing:
"Rather than marking a clean break with their prior approach, Gris Klein considers the subtle but important difference between ‘going hard’ and ‘moving forward’." It is precisely in this tension between holding on and moving forward that Gris Klein finds its strength. The album marks a new chapter for Birds in Row, expanding the trio’s musical horizons without losing touch with their roots.
Since their debut You, Me & the Violence (2012) and the follow-up We Already Lost the World (2018), Birds in Row have refused to be confined by the expectations of their genre. From the atmospheric 13-minute track “Lovers Have Their Say” to the more direct confrontation of “Noah”, which focuses on a world marked by division and unrest, the trio consistently challenge both the boundaries of the genre and the expectations of their listeners.
