Compelling and sumptuous songs from the unforgettable John Grant
Since breaking through with his 2010 solo album Queen of Denmark, American singer/songwriter John Grant has explored a musical universe ranging from grandiose folk-rock and tender ballads to alternative art rock and danceable synthpop in a timeless design.
With a heartfelt humanism and a dry, blackly humorous look at contemporary life in all its beauty and cruelty, John Grant transforms his perspective on life as an HIV-positive gay man into compelling music, always with a sideways glance at the (especially American) political situation and the ongoing rights struggle.
In June 2024, John Grant will release his sixth album The Art of The Lie on UK label Bella Union, his most opulent and cinematic album to date. As the title suggests, you can expect lyrics as spiteful and dark as its production is epic and detailed. The Art of The Lie is inspired by Laurie Anderson and The Art of Noise with a color palette reminiscent of Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack or The Carpenters, of which John Carpenter was a member.
"The clothing that it's dressed up in makes it more palatable," John Grant has said. "It helps the bitter pill go down. Music and humor are how I've always dealt with the dark side of life. Come to think of it, it's how I deal with the good side too."
On November 10, John Grant returns to Denmark, where the notoriously terrific live performer has captivated audiences and critics alike at Roskilde Festival, Heartland and at Store VEGA, where his performances have been honored with 6 stars in GAFFA and called "one of those rare perfect concerts you never forget" by Dagbladet Informations Klaus Lynggaard.
