Funk, folk and soul meet Lebanese folk music in beautiful union
Rogér Fakhr & Charif Megarbane share a common origin in Beirut, but each represent their own generation of artists in Lebanese music culture. Rogér Fakhr began his career in the late 70s, while Charif Megarbane has taken over the baton in recent years.
Rogér Fakhr has established a solid fan base through his disappearing tapes, featuring recordings from 1970s Beirut and from Paris during the Lebanese Civil War. In 2021 and 2023, they were finally released for mainstream listening and streaming by the Habibi Funk label.
The sound of folk, funk, soul and a touch of jazz has resonated strongly with a contemporary audience. The album Fine Anyway (2021) has over 25 million streams on Spotify alone. Fakhr has returned to the studio to record new material.
Charif Megarbane is a man of many talents – producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He has delivered an impressive output of 80 albums in 10 years. In 2023, he released his album Marzipan through Habibi Funk. The record was received with great praise and also ended up on the list of “best albums of the year” at, among others, Les Inrockuptibles, Bandcamp and Treble.
While Charif Megarbane has not been a stranger to the live scene, Rogér Fakhr has not performed in public for several decades. This was broken in late 2024 when the two musicians performed a joint show in London. The reception was overwhelming and the audience welcomed an evening that celebrated Lebanese folk and funk.
Despite their roots in two different generations, the sound of the two artists is largely compatible, and they manage to reach a broad audience.
Support: Fergus Murphy
Fergus Murphy has had his fingers in the Danish club scene for the past 20 years. The Irish-born musician started his career in Dublin, after which he ripped the cables out of the DJ booth and headed to Copenhagen. You may have encountered his charming sound universe at events such as the 'lightsdownlow' party or as host at 'All-Dayer' on the first Sunday of every month.
Murphy's DJ sets are a vibrant and ever-interesting mix of old and new tunes. Genres are not locked boxes for the DJ, but different corners of music that can obviously be mixed together. Fergus Murphy wrings out the musical dishcloth and plays up for a party.
