British post-punks take over VEGA with new album
The recipe is simple and surprisingly effective: take a bit of edgy art rock, mix it with a dash of sinister post-punk and add deadpan poetic lyrics delivered as laconic spoken word. And ta-da: say hello to Dry Cleaning, one of England's most exciting new rock bands.
The group consists of singer Florence Shaw, guitarist Tom Dowse, drummer Nick Buxton and bassist Lewis Maynard and was formed in London in 2017. There are loving nods to arch-British legends like Wire and The Fall, just as the kinship with contemporary names like Porridge Radio and Black Country, New Road is obvious.
The debut New Long Leg was released in 2021, was named “Best New Music” by Pitchfork, received 5 out of 5 stars in The Observer and reached number 4 on the album chart in its home country. The follow-up was released the following year. Stumpwork, which built on the qualities of the debut album. NME awarded it the maximum 5 stars and called it “a bold leap forward, one that sets the band apart from their contemporaries and defies categorization”.
The following years have been spent by Dry Cleaning on intensive touring, which sent them past Roskilde Festival 2023, where GAFFA received 4 big stars. However, there has also been time to write new songs, and the result will be released in the form of the trio's third full-length album "Secret Love", which will be released on January 9th.
The album was created in Wilco anchorman Jeff Tweedy's studio in Chicago, Sonic Studios in Dublin and Loire in France with Cate Le Bon in the production chair. The result is an album that superbly expands Dry Cleaning's musical space and lyrical universe with inspirations from, among others, American 80s hardcore, stoner rock and Laurie Anderson.
The new songs will naturally fill the setlist when Dry Cleaning gives a concert on April 9th, 2026 in Store VEGA.
