Canadian and American folk melodies end the late summer in VEGA
One might be tempted to think of The Deep Dark Woods as a band steeped in tradition, and that might be true, but now, nearly two decades into their life as one of Canada's finest folk-roots bands, that tradition is their own invention.
Ryan Boldt's voice leads the band, and it doesn't take long to reveal that he is a master of nuanced intricacies, working in the vein of iconic singers like Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, Rick Danko, and Jason Molina.
Deep Dark Woods' latest work, Broadside Ballads, Vol. III. from 2024, is part of the album series Broadside Ballads, which focuses on the band's homage to and inspiration from traditional Irish, English and Scottish folk songs.
Nashville singer-songwriter Erin Rae began her musical journey in 2012 with a sound rooted in dreamy indie folk, Americana, and 70s pop-rock in the band Meanwhiles.
However, even as a child, Erin Rae showed an enormous interest and passion for music when she picked up her first six-string guitar in her childhood town of Nashville and began writing songs.
In 2018, her minimalist solo debut was released, Putting on Airs, followed in 2022 by the dynamic, retro-popped and country-oriented Lighten Up, which added elements of light psychedelia, indie pop, and cosmic country to Rae's sonic arsenal.
